Caves
We Love Caves! IT’s exciting to explore underground worlds.
Name: Wind Cave
State: South Dakota
City/ Location: Wind Cave National Park
Comment: We liked Jewel Cave so much, we checked out Wind Cave the next day. We took a guided tour and hiked about 5 miles on boardwalks and stone. This cave was more like “The Flintstones” -- bigger cave rooms and a lot of rock. “Boxwork” rocks are the hallmark here.
Name: Jewel Cave
State: South Dakota
City/ Location: Jewel Cave National Park
Comment: Does walking underground count? We took a guided tour and hiked about 5 miles on boardwalks and stone. Cool rock formations! Also, it was about 48 degrees down there when it was about 95 degrees on land.
Name: Thurston Lava Tube
State: Hawaii
City/ Location: Hawaii’s Volcano National Park
Comment: After going along with a ranger led hike for an hour we went on our own in an unlit lava tube (360 meters). Arthur’s favorite cave because we got to explore it on our own.
Name: Fisher Cave
State: Missouri
City/ Location: Sullivan MO
Comment: Missouri is famous for its caves, thanks to Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher. We explored this amazing cave in Meremac State Park--highly recommend it for its great formations, abundant wildlife and GREAT guides.
Name: Mammoth Caves
State: Kentucky
City/ Location: Mammoth KY
Comment: Large underground rooms, lots of history, but not too many formations. Visit for the stories about its part in the War of 1812, 1900’s TB outbreaks, and remnants of slave tours in the 19th century. A must see for cave enthusiasts, but not all that beautiful.
Name: Craters of the Moon Lava Tube
State: Idaho
City/ Location: Craters of the Moon National Park
Comment: Lava tube with lots of openings at top and rubble to climb on. A good cave for someone afraid of caves, since it’s not dark and there are no creepy animals.
