Scripps Ranch Newsletter says:
“The adventure started six years before Dan Bacon was to retire from his 30 years in the Navy. He and his wife, Beth, thought his retirement would be a good time for them to take a break and come together with their two boys, Arthur and Henry, as a family. Really: 24/7. In a cross-country trip in an RV. It took them four years to plan the trip and more to get the money together to pay for it.
“The boys' school, Miramar Ranch Elementary School, let out June 16, 2008, and they were on the road June 17... They arrived in New England in October in the midst of the brilliant seasonal foliage. ...The Bacons headed down the Eastern Seaboard, then turned west, arriving in San Diego in April 2009--38 states down, 12 to go! They touched base with old friends before flying to Hawaii. On their return they journeyed to the heartland, and in June they will arrive in Washington State, their dream realized.”
Bacon Today Web Site says:
“The Bacon family was about to have some free time. Dan was retiring from a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy so the family decided they would travel around the United States in an RV, making sure to see every one of the 50 US states.
Says Beth Bacon “We are members of a clan lucky enough to be named Bacon! We are traveling around USA, visiting 50 states in 50 weeks and named our trip ‘Bacon Across America.’ We are not specifically on a quest for edible bacon, but bacon has become a theme of our trip. And we have cool bacon T-shirts“.
We greatly admire the trip the Bacons are taking. We here at Bacon Today are inspired and may one day partake of a similar quest, but a quest for bacon of the edible variety in each one of the 50 states.”
KSDK NBC St. Louis says:
NBC -- A California family is making the the trip of a lifetime.
They packed up their home and moved into an RV to tour 50 states in 50 weeks. For the Bacon boys, Henry and Arthur, it's a mobile classroom. Their cross country curriculum is intense.
"When we were first starting it we didn't know if it was going to be great or boring so we were just 'Let's do this and we'll see if it's fun or not'" said Arthur.
The trip began last June. They've titled their tour "Bacon Across America". "It's really fun to kind of have a theme to give us a goal to work for," noted Beth Bacon.
So far, they've traveled to 38 states, and they're tracking it all online at BaconAcrossAmerica.com. "We all do different things," explained Dan Bacon. "The boys have their blog. The parents have theirs. I write restaurant reviews."
Dan retired from the Navy last year and this educational adventure had been a family dream four-years in the making. The highlights are endless. From geography to history, it's a chance to learn and connect as a family.
"If you think you can do it, save your money and do it because it really is," said Dan. "Everyone wants to do it and they really should. It's really been fun."
The family's final stop will be in Alaska. Afterwards, the Bacons intend to move to Washington State, where they'll build a new home on property they purchased a number of years ago.

My father did some what the same thing when I was a junior in High school. He took us on a trip to Alaska all over and then back thru Canada. I was so mad at the time, but as an adult it is my fondest memories of my family and the time I got to spend with my younger bother and sister. And now I live in one of the areas that we explored and love it. cool website. ~ Effa
What a wonderful website, and a wonderful experience for you as well. I'm sure your boys learned so much while you were on the road. In fact, I'm sure your kids did because mine did as well. Back in 1999, my husband and I quit our jobs, sold our home, bought a motor home, took the kids out of school and traveled for 16 months across the US and Canada. ... We instilled a great love of travel, not vacationing, in our kids. ... They understand that a place is really its people, and you can't meet the people in a hotel room. ~ Mary

Dale Julin here..... anchor/producer of the KSBW TV-8 Midday news here in Salinas/Monterey/Santa Cruz. FYI... I love what you're doing, so I put a copy of the S.D. TV story in our show today at noon. Wish I could take my family of four on the same journey. Perhaps you've inspired us to do so next year.
